Christmas is comming

Christmas time, time for peace, time for silence, time for family, children, presents. Christmas time in Bohemia starts on the first Sunday after 26th November. Most of families set a Christmas wreath with four candles and light one of them each Sunday.
On 4th December people cut cherry branches, put theminto water. The brunches are called „Barborka“ according to St Babora whose name´s day is celebrated on this day. If the brunch = „Barborka“ comes into blooms on Christmas Eve, the girls who cut the brunch will get married next year.

On 5th December (one day before name´s day of St Nicholaus) St Nicholaus, and Angel and Devil godown the streets , visit familiesand praise good children or „punnish bad children“ (The Devil has got a big bag and a chain and threatens with putting the bad kid into the bag and taking her/him to Hell.It means, that good and nice children get presents - like a chocolate, sweets, … or small things.).

Lights

Our towns are decorated with plenty of small lights.
Christmas trees are placed on many places and squars
in the town.
At this time people buy last presents, christmas trees, decorations, … and a mistletoe.
Our Mums bake small christmas cookies.

The 24 December – the most important day. Whole family meet at home. It’s time for decorating the christmas tree.

It’s a tradition that when we don’t eat anything for the whole day until to the dinner we will see „a gold pig“ may be.

When sun sets, family members sit at a table and have Christmas dinner. We eat a fryied carp with potato salad.

After dinner is time for giving and getting presents. Traditionally we wait for bell’s ringing. It’s a sign that Baby-Jesus has came, light up the candles on the Xmas tree and brought presents under the tree. We go to the tree and take the presents.
Next two days – the 25 and26 December are days for visiting our family relations and friends.
It usually snows in winter months so we go skiing, sledging, skating an build snowmen on Christmas holidays. We can also watch fairy-tales on Tv all Christmas days.
