for all the tourists and local people who like skiing. Our most popular
ski resorts are at The Letch and The Cairngorms.

15. Gaelic is the national language of Scotland. It
is mainly spoken by people living on the West Coast of Scotland, and
the Western Islands. There is a big push just now keeping the language
alive. In our area of the North East of Scotland we speak a dialect
called Doric.

16. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone over
100 years ago. He lived in Elgin for a short while.

17. We have big, brown, hairy cows with huge horns
and wet noses. They are called Highlands Cows or Heilan'Coos!

to be known as Auld Reekie because there were so many chimneys. It used

25. Some Scots men wear skirts called kilts. They
are made of a material called Tartan. In olden days each family - clan
had their own tartan and so was instantly recognisable. Nowadays kilts
are mainly worn at functions like wedding and Highland Games. Or as
'Sunday best'.

26. The Scottish flag is blue with a white diagonal
cross. It is known as the Saltire. There is also a yellow flag with
a red lion standing upright on its hind leg. This flag is known as the
Lion Rampant. This flag was used in battles and is now often used by
supporters of football.

27. St Andrews is the patron saint of Scotland and
he was crucified on a diagonal cross - ence the reason why we have diagonal
cross on our natonal flag.

28. A ceilidh is the name given to a Scottish party
where people sing, dance and tell stories. Adults also drink lots of
whisky at a ceilidh!

29. There are dolphins in the Moray Firth which is
about 8 miles from our school. You often see them at Lossiemouth Beach
and from the visitor centre at Spey Bay. In summer you can go out on
a boat to spot them.

30. Scotland has many islands around it. To the north
are the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands and to the west there
are the Western Islands. Our teacher's mum grew up on the Island of
Stroma shown in this photo.

31. Christianity is the main religion of Scotland
and in our town of Elgin there are over 10 different Christian churches.

32. Near Elgin is Pluscarden Abbey where many monks
live. They grow and sell fruit, vegetables, wine and honey. They spend
a lot of time praying and singing.
